Just Fabulous: Jonathan Del Arco Fans

In anticipation of tonight’s episode 17 of season 5 – “Dead Drop”, James Duff gave us a little taste of what we can expect.

Jonathan Del Arco is an extraordinary actor, capable of so much more than his role as the coroner on our series demands. Though he is quick to describe himself as the Paul Lynde of Major Crimes, in reality, his talents run much deeper than tossing off mordant quips on the nature of death. Whether he is jealously guarding his prerogatives, emotionally devastated from the autopsy of a child or creepily fascinated with the more gruesome elements of his job, Jonathan makes his character sharp and compelling, which is why we’ve struggled for years to come up with a plot that could authentically include Dr. Morales through an entire story.

James Duff’s Blog entry >

Enter the detectives of Major Crimes, whose task it is to uncover secret connections – the theme of “Cleared History” – and follow them to their logical conclusions. I don’t want to mislead you. Tonight’s episode may start with a lighter tone, but it ends in a very dark place. I ask forgiveness, in advance, for leaving a great deal of the collected evidence off-screen. Sometimes, it’s better to let our imaginations fill in the blanks.

Fernando Fans –

The screencaps for episode 5×14 “Heart Failure” are now in the gallery. Check them out!

James Duff once again shared his thoughts about the upcoming episode of Major Crimes in his Facebook Blog entry.

Major Crimes will begin its winter run by dramatizing connections from its past to its future. In the aptly named “Heart Failure,” we introduce our team of detectives embroiled in an event that police officers have encountered all over the country over the last four or five years. We meet Flynn, once again adjusting to the drudgeries of desk duty. Sykes and Sanchez find a blue, Burberry jacket, once an emblem of a bright future, hanging in a closet associated with a much darker past. Buzz gets a disturbing letter, which he’s not sure how to answer.

February 15 – James Duff’s Blog Post

While finding connections is a common tool in murder investigations, the word also honored what we consider to be the exceptional relationship we have with our audience. Also, we wanted to “connect” the possible conclusion of Major Crimes to what had come before.

February 20 – New York Post – Camryn Manheim pushes buttons as steely chief on ‘Major Crimes’

Camryn Manheim (“The Practice,” “Extant”) joins the cast in the recurring role of LAPD Deputy Chief of Operations Winnie Davis, a by-the-book cop who locks horns with Major Crimes Division Captain Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell). It’s a table-turner for Raydor, the former internal affairs head who was originally an antagonist to Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Kyra Sedgwick) on “The Closer,” from which “Major Crimes” was spun off in 2012.

February 21 – Troy L. Foreman interviewed James Duff for The Pop Culture Principle

Pop Culture Principle – How confident were you that Major Crimes would get another season renewal?

James Duff – Not very confident. It’s not because the show isn’t popular because the show remains popular, but because TNT has a new plan that they really want to put into place. They are seriously committed to their new strategy and we are not really part of that strategy yet. I think they are trying to figure out how to use us in a way that doesn’t harm what they are trying to accomplish and keep the audience satisfied. So, it’s a very delicate dance the network is doing while they are trying to change their brand identity and not lose one of their more popular shows in the process.

What is Dr. Morales (Jonathan Del Arco) up to this season?

There’s a really fun episode where we find a body up a tree and Dr. Morales appears with his father, a retired detective who’s visiting from South America, who pretends that he is much more connected to Major Crimes than he actually is, and hangs on through the whole episode. I think that’s a fun episode. If you like Dr. Morales, you’re going to enjoy it.

February 22 – TV Line -Major Crimes Boss Previews Andy’s Fate and the Fight for Taylor’s Job

[O]n the decidedly lighter side, Dr. Morales (Jonathan Del Arco) will put on quite a show when his dad visits from South America.

“He’s a retired cop, his father, and Dr. Morales has perhaps misrepresented how closely he works with Major Crimes,” Duff says with a chuckle. “So everybody sort of tries to help Dr. Morales keep up the fiction!”

February 22 – MCTV Exclusive with James Duff

MCTV:We were all thrilled and relieved by the recent renewal announcement for season 6, but it came pretty late in the game in terms of where you were in the production schedule of these episodes. Did the delay in renewal affect the storytelling and how you wrote this winter arc, not knowing if there would be another season after this?

JD: I was preparing to do the last eight episodes as if we were going to do no more, but we also planned it so the last episode could go a multitude of ways depending on what happened. The word came down [that the show was renewed] before we started shooting the last two episodes. So as things turned out, we were prepared for the renewal with an alternate script, and the renewal came, and so we had that script ready to shoot.
